How to Neuter a Stray Cat with KAT

Found a stray cat that needs neutering? You can make a difference โ€” even if you are only on Kefalonia for a short time.

Have you found a stray cat that needs neutering?

You may be living on Kefalonia, regularly feeding a local cat, or simply visiting the island on holiday and have met a cat you want to help.

You can make a difference even if you are only here for a short time. KAT supports TNR โ€” Trap, Neuter, Return โ€” to prevent unwanted litters and reduce suffering among stray and community cats.

KAT is entirely volunteer-run. There are no permanent paid staff. Volunteers give their time and often their own money to help animals.

We need your help.

The five steps

1

Message KAT on Facebook Messenger

Send KAT a message on Facebook Messenger and tell about the cat you want to help. Please include:

  • Exact location where the cat lives
  • A clear photo of the cat
  • Male or female, if you know
  • Whether the cat has an ear tip
  • How many cats are in the area
  • Whether you are feeding or regularly monitoring the cat
  • Whether it appears to be a stray/community cat or owned
  • Your name and contact number
  • How long you will be on Kefalonia, if you are visiting
  • When you would ideally be able to take the cat to the vet

Please contact KAT before trapping the cat.

2

KATs will give you a code

If the cat can be included in the KATs TNR programme, KAT will give you a code. Keep this code safe. The code tells the participating vet that the cat is being neutered through the KATs programme.

3

Take the cat to a vet

Once you have your code, arrange to take the cat to one of the vets working with KATs. When you arrive, give the vet your KATs code.

Do not assume that every vet on Kefalonia participates in the KATs programme. Confirm the current participating vet and arrangements with KATs.

4

The cat is neutered

The participating veterinarian carries out the neutering. KAT uses donations to help fund neutering and make TNR possible.

If you are able to contribute towards the cost of the cat you have found, please tell KAT when you contact them. Your help can mean that KAT can help another cat too.

5

The cat is returned

After the operation and recovery period, the cat should normally be returned the next day to the area where it was found.

This is TNR: TRAP โ†’ NEUTER โ†’ RETURN

The aim is not to remove healthy community cats from their territory. It is to prevent further unwanted litters and reduce suffering.

FAQs

You don't have to be a KATs volunteer

You don't need to join KATs to help one cat.

You don't need to live on Kefalonia.

You don't even need to have planned to help an animal when you arrived.

You can simply see a cat that needs help and decide to do something. Message KAT. Ask what is possible.

Kefalonia needs more people to help with TNR. Local residents, visitors, people who feed cats, businesses, vets and volunteers can all play a part.

One person. One cat. One operation.

That one action can mean dozens of kittens are never born into a life of hunger, illness, injury and abandonment.
